Changing your residence to the USA can be a fresh start. You’re opening doors for yourself, exploring a new country, and building a new life. But that doesn’t mean it’s not difficult. The good news is that a boutique translation agency can help.
There are so many legal procedures to follow, documents to submit, and applications to send in. And that all becomes so much more complicated when all of your paperwork is in another language.
Almost all legal entities in the US only take documents written in English. So they need to be translated, and translated perfectly – any mistakes can set you back weeks or even months in corrections and re-submissions.
Something as simple as submitting an income statement for an apartment rental application can quickly turn into a headache if a few words are translated incorrectly.
In almost all cases, you need a certified translation, and someone to do the translating for you. That’s where I come in.
I’ll go over how to find a translation agency, and how to choose the one that works for you.
There are a few tried and true ways to find a translator near you. But it can be even easier – getting your documents translated online is quick, easy, and it works.
If you’re still not sure exactly what a certified translation is or why you’d need one, you can look through my resource: “What Exactly is a Certified Translation?” It’s a quick read, and I go over everything you need to know.
If you want to get your document translated in person, you can run a quick google search for “translation agencies near me” or “translation services [your location].” You can also typically get a referral from your doctor’s or lawyer’s office, because legal entities often have a translator or at least know where to go.
But going in person takes time, and often, there aren’t actual agencies near you. Getting your certified translation over the internet is fast and completely valid as well as you request a certified translation.
When you find your agency online, look specifically for the words “certified translation.” Your document
must
be certified – it can’t just be a quick translation done by anyone.
While there are many translation agencies online, not all of them are up to par. You want an agency that cares about you, and makes sure your document is translated exactly the way you need.
Many translators lack the cultural knowledge to make sure your certified translation is nuanced and reads like it was in English in the first place.
You want an agency that will communicate with you ideally in your native language (Spanish or English) and answer your questions. Many of the larger agencies can be fast, but indifferent – you might end up more confused than when you started, or have difficulties finding where to submit and receive documents.
Individualized, cross-cultural services are best. These are “boutique translation agencies” that are small, and only take a handful of clients at a time to make sure they have a personalized experience.
Boutique translation agencies are typically the best suited to translate your documents if you’re looking for a personal approach and support.
The hardest part of translations is deciphering not only the words of the document, but also the context. You won’t get that without individualized translations, where you communicate directly with your translator.
There is no set price for getting your certified translation. Like many things in life, the context matters. That means there’s no specific answer if you’ve wondered, “How much does a translation agency charge per page?”
If your document is long and complicated, it will cost more to get your certified translation. For instance, if there is a complicated legal brief that must be translated, the pricing will be affected by the complexity of the document.
But that can also be a positive thing, because if your document is simple, it will cost less! Papers like birth certificate excerpts or driver’s licenses are faster and, therefore, cheaper.
Typically, getting your certified translation is not too expensive. And at the end of the day, you get peace of mind that your documents will be accepted, and nothing will hold up your application processes.
Working with a boutique translation agency is incredibly simple and straightforward. You work with one translator, who handles every part of getting your translation.
You can receive individual help, clear communication, and a welcoming environment.
